Driver Guide

Driver Quick-Start

Everything you need to know to join a TourCue event and follow the route — from getting the app to what to do if you miss a turn.

1Get the app

TourCue is a native app for iPhone and Android, purpose-built for in-car navigation. You do not need to create a TourCue account to join a route.

iOS: get it on the Apple App Store. Android:the app is currently in testing — join via your organizer’s link until the Google Play listing is public.

2Join a route

Your event organizer will share a QR code, a join link, or a 12-character join code. Any of these takes you directly into the route — no account required for open events.

  1. 1

    Open the TourCue app

Launch TourCue on your phone. If this is your first time, the app will ask for location permission — tap Allow While Using App.

  2. 2

    Tap Join a Tour

You can join three ways: scan the QR code your organizer displays, tap the join link they sent via text or email, or tap "Enter code manually" and type the 12-character share token.

  3. 3

Enter your name and tap Join

Type your name (and car number if requested). For registered events, you'll verify your email first. For lead car drivers, enter the lead car passcode here.

  4. 4

Review the Route Overview, then tap Begin Route

You land on the Route Overview map showing the full route, stops, and starting instructions. When the group is ready, tap Begin Route to start navigation.

If you received a link in advance, open it before you leave home to pre-load the route and map tiles. This avoids any connectivity issues at the starting location.

3The navigation screen

Once you tap Begin Route, the map fills your screen and rotates to match your heading. Here’s what you’ll see:

Turn instruction bubble

A large card at the top shows your next turn — the street name, distance to the turn, and a direction arrow. It updates automatically as you drive.

Live position dot

A blue dot shows your exact position on the route map. The map rotates to face the direction you're driving.

Speed display

Your current speed in MPH and the posted speed limit are shown in a DOT-style sign in the corner of the screen. The sign turns orange when you are over the limit.

Broadcast banner

When the organizer sends a quick message, a banner slides in at the top of the screen with the message text and a voice announcement.

Lead car position

The lead car's real-time GPS position appears as a distinct marker on your map, updated every few seconds.

The screen stays on automatically during navigation — TourCue activates a wake lock so your phone does not dim or lock while you’re driving.

4Cue cards

Cue cards are the turn-by-turn instructions your organizer has written for the route. They appear automatically as you approach each turn — you don’t need to tap anything.

  1. 1

    Card appears before the turn

As you approach a turn, the cue card slides in showing the instruction (e.g., "Turn right on FM 1234 — look for the red barn on the left").

  2. 2

    Voice announcement

A voice announcement reads the instruction aloud as you approach the turn. Keep your volume up so you can hear it over road noise. A mute button is available if needed.

  3. 3

    Card dismisses automatically

Once you've made the turn, the card dismisses and the next one queues up for the following turn.

If you want to preview upcoming turns, swipe the cue card left or right to browse ahead. Tap it to return to the active card.

On multi-leg tours, when you finish a leg TourCue automatically offers the next leg in the day. Tap Begin Route on the Route Overview to continue.

5Broadcast messages

The organizer can send real-time messages to everyone on the route from the Event Day console — road closures, stop changes, safety alerts, or general announcements. These are separate from caution pins, which the lead car drops to mark hazards.

On-screen banner

Messages appear as a full-width banner at the top of your navigation screen. Tap it to dismiss.

Voice announcement

A voice announcement reads the message aloud so you are notified even if you are not looking at the screen. Voice cues play even when your ringer is on silent.

Messages inbox

Tap the bell icon to see the full history of broadcasts and caution alerts with timestamps. The badge shows how many are unread. Routine proximity pop-ups do not fill the inbox.

Caution pins

The lead car can mark a hazard ahead — it appears on your map with a short note. These are separate from organizer broadcasts.

Report an issue

Tap the speech-bubble icon to tell the organizer about a problem on the route. Pick a severity (minor / moderate / critical), add a short description, and send. Your location and current route step are attached automatically.

You cannot reply to broadcast messages from the participant app — they are one-way from the organizer to all drivers. If you need to contact the organizer, use your phone or radio as usual.

6Off-route recovery

If you miss a turn, TourCue detects it automatically and helps you get back on track.

  1. 1

    Off Route banner appears

If you stray more than 300 ft from the planned route, an amber "Off Route — turn around" banner appears, a voice announcement plays, and a dashed orange line is drawn on the map showing the way back to the planned route.

  2. 2

Follow the dashed orange line back

The dashed orange line guides you back to the nearest point on the planned route. When you rejoin within 150 ft, the banner clears automatically and you'll hear "Back on route."

  3. 3

Or tap Get Me There to skip ahead

If you can't safely turn around — you missed a turn, hit a road closure, or fell too far behind — tap the Get Me There arrow. TourCue asks to confirm, then opens your phone's native Maps app (Apple Maps on iPhone, Google Maps on Android) with directions to the next stop. Use it to catch up, then switch back to TourCue to continue the organized route.

  4. 4

Reset the map if it seems stuck

If the map doesn't re-center after your phone was locked for a while, tap the circular-arrow button to reset and re-center.

Do not attempt to turn around on a highway or make unsafe maneuvers to get back on route. Find a safe place to stop, assess your position on the map, and use Get Me There or rejoin the group at the next stop.

7Tips for a smooth ride

Charge your phone before the event

Navigation uses GPS continuously. Start with a full charge and bring a car charger if the route is long.

Pre-load the route in advance

Open the route the night before the event so the map tiles are cached locally. If you lose cell signal on rural roads, navigation will continue to work.

Turn your volume up

Voice guidance and broadcast messages play through your phone's speaker. Make sure it's audible over road noise before you start.

Mount your phone where you can see it

A windshield or vent mount keeps the screen visible without requiring you to hold the phone. Keep both hands on the wheel.

Keep a safe following distance

Always maintain a safe gap from the vehicle ahead. TourCue is a navigation aid — you are responsible for safe driving at all times.

TourCue is a navigation aid, not a replacement for judgment

Always obey road signs, traffic laws, and actual road conditions. If TourCue and a road sign conflict, follow the road sign.

8Lead car drivers

If your organizer gave you the lead car passcode, enter it on the join screen. You’ll see a Lead Car badge and one extra control on the driving screen.

Drop caution pin

Marks a hazard at your current GPS position. Every driver sees the pin on their map and gets an alert. There is a short cooldown between pins to prevent accidental spam.

Lead car position broadcast

Your position is shared with the entire group and shown as a distinct marker on every driver's map, updated every few seconds. Participants can see how far ahead the lead car is.

Broadcast messages and quick-message shortcuts are sent by the organizerfrom their Event Day console — not from the lead car’s phone. The lead car’s in-app tool is the caution pin.

9Privacy & your data

TourCue uses your location only during an active event — to place you on the route and show your car on the convoy map. Live position data is temporary and cleared after the event ends.

Open events

No account is created. Your name and position are used only for the duration of the event.

Registered events

A lightweight account is created tied to the email you registered with. Your registration record, waiver acknowledgment, and payment summary are retained as required by law.

Delete your account & data

On the app's Home screen, tap the gear in the top-right → Account → Delete my account & data, then confirm. This removes your name, email, phone, emergency contact, vehicle, and location data. Payment records (7 years) and waiver acknowledgments (5 years) are retained without your identifiers as required by law.
